The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has yet to spawn its first storm, but that hasn't been the case in June so far this decade.

On June 23, 2020, five years ago today, Tropical Storm Dolly formed over the western Atlantic Ocean south of Nova Scotia, Canada, and well off the U.S. East Coast.

Dolly didn't last long and wasn't of much consequence, but it was already the fourth storm of the 2020 season. Arthur and Bertha formed in May. Then, in early June, Cristobal lashed the Gulf Coast, and its remnant pushed as far north as Wisconsin, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and even Ontario, Canada.

That was almost two months ahead of the average fourth storm pace – Aug. 15 – according to the National Hurricane Center.

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season obliterated the record number of storms for any season (30). It not only exhausted the entire names list, but went nine storms deep into Greek alphabet names, ending with Hurricane Iota.

As we discussed in a previous piece, this quiet June in 2025 reduces the chance of a hyperactive season this year. But as in all hurricane seasons, it only takes one storm striking your area to make it a memorable season.
