Nothing goes with chicken nuggets and French fries quite like fast food vanilla ice cream. The sweet, creamy treat is the ultimate complement to salty fried food. And although that sweet, swirly stuff that comes in a cup or cone may look very similar no matter where you order it, I'm here to tell you that there are many differences. How can I say that with such confidence? To find the best fast food ice cream, I taste-tested six different vanilla ice creams from classic drive-thrus to see which one is worth adding to your combo meal.Fast food ice cream is its own unique variation of the dairy dessert. It's not usually the old-fashioned, hand-packed scoops you get from your local ice cream shop nor does it boast expensive, obscure ingredients the way that some artisanal pints do. Most fast food ice cream is available in two flavors—vanilla and chocolate—and most closely resembles soft serve-style ice cream. Some, as I learned, taste more artificially flavored than others and have varied ingredients. From custard-inspired ice creams to light and airy swirls, each fast food chain offers its own spin on the frosty menu item. For the sake of this test, I compared vanilla ice creams across six different nationwide fast food chains. I tasted each one consecutively over the course of two days and resisted ordering any other food from these chains so I could focus solely on the ice cream. Grab a spoon (or two) and find out which ice creams are worth waiting in the drive-thru for and which ones you're better off driving right on past.

How I Tested These Fast Food Vanilla Ice Creams
To find out the best fast food vanilla ice cream, I went to six different fast food chains across Connecticut. I chose chains that had numerous locations across the country rather than specific regional restaurants and I only visited fast food restaurants that offered a version of soft serve vanilla ice cream. While the specific style of ice cream varied from chain to chain, I didn't include any milkshakes (or milkshake-style drinks) in this test. Sorry, Wendy's!After researching different styles of frozen vanilla desserts across national fast food restaurants, I narrowed down the list to Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Dairy Queen, McDonald's, Shake Shack and Sonic. I ordered each vanilla dessert in a cup so that I could taste the ice cream on its own rather than against the other flavors and textures of a cone. I tasted each ice cream immediately upon ordering and made notes on texture, flavor and temperature. Because prices can vary from location to location, cost wasn't a factor in my ranking. However, it's worth noting that, in the end, the best ice creams were the most expensive and the worst were the least expensive.Related: We Tried 25 Dairy Queen Blizzard Flavors

6 Fast Food Vanilla Ice Creams, Ranked Worst to Best
The next time you're ordering fast food, you're going to want to add the winning dessert to your order.
6. Burger King Vanilla Ice Cream
I think I still have brain freeze from Burger King's ice cream. This may have been the coldest thing I've ever tasted (is it possibly for something to be icier than ice?). When I got past the initial chill, I was underwhelmed by this bland dessert. It wasn't particularly rich, creamy or flavorful—though I could imagine how good it would taste with a side of salty fries.Related: I Tried 11 Popular Chocolate Ice Cream Brands and the Winner Was Rich, Creamy and Pretty Much Perfect
5. Chick-fil-A Vanilla Icedream
After having tasted my way through Chick-fil-A's milkshake offerings, I had high hopes for their vanilla ice cream (which is technically called Icedream). Unfortunately, it was a lot like Burger King's—super cold with a grainy, watery texture. It scored points for its vanilla flavor, which was the best of any of the ice creams that I tasted. Though there weren't any specks of vanilla bean, it had a real vanilla flavor that was likely the result of either pure vanilla extract or a vanilla bean infusion. Still, the texture left a lot to be desired, which landed it near the bottom. My professional advice? When you're at Chick-fil-A, stick to the shakes. Related: What's the Best Meal at Chick-fil-A?
4. Sonic Vanilla Ice Cream
This swirly, twirly cup tasted like creamy, extra-thick Cool Whip—in the best way. It had a really nice texture and a satisfying flavor. In terms of the taste, it didn't have any pronounced vanilla notes, but the thick texture and milkiness still made me go back for another spoonful. 3. Dairy Queen Vanilla Ice Cream
If I closed my eyes, I'd be hard-pressed to tell you the difference between Sonic and Dairy Queen's vanilla ice cream. These two soft serve options were remarkably similar, but Dairy Queen's was just a little better (notably, it was also more expensive). This one had a more pronounced vanilla flavor, which I really enjoyed, and that's why it ranked just a smidge higher than Sonic.Related: Dairy Queen Fans are Drooling Over Reveal of Secret Menu: 'I Would Totally Grab'
2. Shake Shack Vanilla Frozen Custard
Creamy and custardy, Shake Shack's signature dessert tasted like the highest quality ice cream of the six that I tasted. It was smooth and creamy with a rich eggy flavor. It didn't have the most pronounced vanilla flavor, but it was well-balanced. The chain serves scoops of their custard in a cup and was arguably the one that most closely resembled a cup of old-fashioned hand-scooped ice cream. The only reason why I didn't award it top place was that I don't think that the custard-style treat is universally appealing. If you're a frozen custard fan, though, this will likely be your top pick.Related: We Ranked the 21 Most Popular Shake Shack Menu Items From Sandwiches to Shakes
1. McDonald's Vanilla Ice Cream
If the ice cream maker at your local McDonald's is working, you're in for a real treat. This is the Goldilocks of fast food vanilla ice cream—it's creamy and thick without being too thick or custardy. It has a lovely vanilla flavor and is just cold enough to be refreshing on a hot summer day (or with a side of savory chicken McNuggets). Its universally appealing flavor and texture are the reasons why this one ended up at the top of my list.
