The first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season is also one of the largest, fastest-growing hurricanes in recorded history.
Hurricane Erin, which reached hurricane-force winds late last week, grew to a Category 5 storm before weakening as it approached the U.S. East Coast.
After bringing heavy rains to Puerto Rico, parts of the Bahamas and other islands in the region, the storm system moved north, bringing storm surges and large waves to the North Carolina coast, and tropical storm conditions to Virginia's coat.
The storm is still forecast to bring rains and "life-threatening surf and rip currents" to the East Coast, Canada, the Bahamas and Bermuda over the next several days, according to the National Hurricane Center.
NBC News will be updating the hurricane's projected path map with the latest forecast.
Hurricane Erin is one of the five North Atlantic storm systems to reach Category 5 status the fastest, according to an NBC News analysis of government hurricane data.
