Jason OwensJuly 1, 2025 at 4:39 AM

A lawsuit accusing BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff of sexually assaulting a woman in his home has been dismissed.

According to multiple reports, attorneys for Retzlaff and his accuser filed a joint motion Monday in Salt Lake City's 3rd District Court to dismiss the case "with prejudice and upon the merits of the Plaintiff's complaint against the Defendant," meaning that the plaintiff cannot refile the lawsuit.

News of the lawsuit's dismissal arrives a day after news broke that Retzlaff reportedly intends to transfer from BYU in the wake of a pending seven-game suspension by the school stemming from the lawsuit. The suspension is reportedly not because of the now-dismissed sexual assault allegation, but because Retzlaff contended in his response to the lawsuit that he engaged in consensual premarital sex.

BYU is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The school's honor code instructs students to "live a chaste and virtuous life" and prohibits them from engaging in premarital sex. It applies to all students whether or not they are Mormon. Retzlaff is not Mormon.

The lawsuit and Retzlaff's response

In the lawsuit that was filed in May, a Salt Lake County woman referred to as Jane Doe A.G. accused Retzlaff of sexually assaulting her in his home in 2023. The lawsuit stated that she consented to kissing while in Retzlaff's room as the two watched a movie but "did not want to do anything more." Jane Doe A.G accused Retzlaff of forcibly raping her after she repeatedly told him "no" and to "stop."

Per the lawsuit, Retzlaff's accuser reported the alleged sexual assault to police, underwent a rape kit and had pictures taken of her injuries. According to the lawsuit, she did not initially identify Retzlaff to police. Retzlaff does not face criminal charges.

Retzlaff denied that he assaulted his accuser in a legal response filed Friday. In the response filed by his attorney, Retzlaff stated that he had sex with his accuser as part of a "normal evening of consensual sexual interaction."

The filing stated that Retzlaff and his accuser exchanged text messages for months after the alleged assault and that his accuser intended to "extort money from him" now that he's an NFL prospect. The lawsuit sought damages of at least $300,000.

BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff has reportedly told teammates and the coaching staff that he intends to transfer. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) ()Honor code violation and transfer

Two days after his response asserting that he had consensual sex with his accuser, it was reported that BYU planned to suspend Retzlaff for the honor code violation. Regarding the lawsuit, BYU previously issued a statement when it was filed in May.

"The university takes any allegation very seriously, following all processes and guidelines mandated by Title IX. Due to federal and university privacy laws and practices for students, the university will not be able to provide additional comment."

Retzlaff would not be the first BYU athlete to face a lengthy suspension for an honor code violation. Former running back Jamaal Williams missed the entire 2015 season when he was at BYU before returning to the team for his senior season in 2016. When asked by the Green Bay Packers in the pre-draft process why he missed that season, Williams said he told them, "I had a girl in my room."

In 2011, basketball player Brandon Davies was dismissed from the team for an honor code violation. That team featuring Jimmer Fredette was ranked No. 3 in the nation at the time of Davies' dismissal.

Retzlaff is a graduate student and has one year of NCAA eligibility remaining. Per ESPN, he was working out with BYU with the intention of playing in the fall prior to news of his pending suspension. He has since informed his teammates and coaching staff of his intent to transfer and plans to put his name in the transfer portal in the coming days, according to the report.

Retzlaff initially transferred to BYU from Riverside City College in 2023. He was BYU's starting quarterback in 2024 after playing a backup role in his first season. He led the Cougars to an 11-2 season in 2024 that concluded with an Alamo Bowl victory over Colorado. Retzlaff completed 57.9% of his passes for 2,947 yards (226.7 yards per game) on 8 yards per attempt with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Trump admin will cut hurricane forecasters out of key satellite data in one month

 • Trump admin will cut hurricane forecasters out of key satellite data in one month

Andrew Freedman, CNNJune 30, 2025 at 7:49 PM

An SSMI image of Hurricane Ida in August 2021. - (CIMSS/SSEC/University of Wisconsin, NOAA/NASA)

The abrupt cutoff of satellite data crucial for hurricane forecasting is delayed by one month, until July 31, according to a message posted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Monday.

The impending data loss from a Department of Defense weather satellite system was announced on June 25 and slated to take place "no later than" Monday, according to an earlier NOAA announcement.

The Defense Department will still maintain the Defense Meteorological Satellite program, but announced last week it would cease sharing the imagery with NOAA and NASA.

The decision, which was initiated by the Defense Department, caused an uproar among meteorologists, public officials and the media in the midst of hurricane season. The fear is that the missing information could degrade the accuracy of hurricane forecasts. The move comes in the wake of steep personnel cuts at the National Weather Service and other parts of NOAA.

The data in question is from a microwave sounder data known as the Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder, or SSMIS. This tool is like a 3D X-ray of tropical storms and hurricanes, revealing where the strongest rain bands and winds are likely to be and how they are shifting.

Such imagery provides forecasters with information about a storm's inner structure and is one of the limited ways they can discern how quickly and significantly a storm's intensity is changing, particularly at night and during periods when hurricane hunter aircraft are not flying in the storm.

According to a former NOAA employee familiar with the matter, the Defense Department's actions caught the nation's weather and oceans agency off guard, along with NASA, whose scientists also use this satellite imagery.

A current NOAA staff member also told CNN the agency, including the National Hurricane Center, was blindsided by the sudden data cut off when it was first announced.

The delay through July, both sources said, is the result of pressure from NOAA and NASA officials. The new NOAA message supports this, stating: "Late on Friday, June 27th, CNMOC received a request from Dr. Germain with NASA to postpone the removal and to continue processing and distributing DMSP data through July 31st."

"An update service advisory will be sent and FNMOC now expects to decommission DMSP processing no later than July 31st," the message states, referring to the Navy's Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center. The satellite status message references Karen M. St. Germain, the division director for NASA's Earth Science Division. This indicates the intervening of a high level official in this matter.

The one month delay does not solve the issue since hurricane season peaks in August and September, and there currently is no plan in place for resuming the flow of this data, even when a new Defense Department weather satellite begins operations in October. Currently, NOAA is planning for that microwave imagery from that satellite will flow to the agency.

According to media reports last week, the Defense Department's rationale for cutting off this data has to do with cybersecurity concerns stemming from the way the data is transmitted between agencies.

NOAA has publicly maintained there are many other sources of data on hurricanes that will allow for accurate forecasts this season.

The Atlantic hurricane season does not end until November 30, and this season is expected to be another unusually active one.

This is a developing story and will be .

Caitlin Clark's version of a popular Nike sneaker, where the WNBA superstar etched her name next to the late NBA icon Kobe Bryant, dropped and sold out quickly on Monday morning.

The Kobe V Protro retails for $190 and incorporates slightly more splashy versions of blue, red, and gold, colors of her team, the Indiana Fever.

They were made available online at 10 a.m. EDT, and Nike's initial offering of the shoes was gone in minutes.

It wasn't immediately clear how many pairs Nike sold or when the next offering would be made available.

The Protros already appeared in the resale markets, with the online seller eBay featuring scores of pairs for more than $350.

A rep for Nike could not be immediately reached for comment on Monday.

Nike described the sneakers' shades as "Midnight Navy, Bright Crimson, vibrant hits of University Gold, and polished off with a high-gloss finish that glistens under the spotlight."

Before his retirement in 2016 and death in a 2020 helicopter crash, Bryant was arguably basketball's most famous contemporary name.

And likewise, Clark has become the world's biggest name in women's basketball, if not the sport at large.

Clark finished her amateur career at the University of Iowa last year as her sport's all-time leading scorer before winning the WNBA's Rookie of the Year award.

She was named Time Magazine's Athlete of the Year for 2024.

Also on Sunday, Clark and Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier were named captains for the WNBA's All-Star Game, which will be held on July 19 at Fever's home court, Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Trump administration eyes Fed vacancy in early 2026 to appoint Powell successor, Bessent says

-

 • Trump administration eyes Fed vacancy in early 2026 to appoint Powell successor, Bessent says

July 1, 2025 at 1:26 AM

(Reuters) -The Trump administration is considering using the next expected Federal Reserve Board of Governors vacancy in early 2026 for appointing a successor to central bank Chair Jerome Powell, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday.

"There's a seat opening up, a 14-year seat opening up in January. So we've given thought to the idea that perhaps that person would go on to become the chair when Jay Powell leaves in May, or we could appoint the new chair in May," Bessent said on Bloomberg TV. "Unfortunately, that's just a two-year seat."

Governor Adriana Kugler's term on the board expires on January 31, 2026, providing an option for President Donald Trump to name a governor for a full 14-year term who could later be promoted to chair. Powell's term as chair ends in late May 2026, while his own seat on the board only extends to January 31, 2028. Powell is not required to leave the Fed after his term as its leader lapses, but by custom most past Fed chairs have opted to leave.

The board seats held by Kugler and Powell are the only two scheduled to expire during Trump's term.

Bessent, in responding to a question whether it would cause confusion to appoint someone in January with a thought of that person ascending to chair later, appeared to confirm that at least one current board member is in the running for the job.

"Obviously there are people who are currently at the Fed who are under consideration. So why would there be confusion, if you add another candidate in January," he said.

Governor Christopher Waller, appointed by Trump during the president's first term, is reported to be among those Trump is considering for the job. Waller recently has said he would like to resume interest rate cuts as soon as the Fed's next meeting in late July. Others said to be in the running include Bessent, Trump economic adviser Kevin Hassett and former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh.

On Friday, Trump said he would not give the job to anyone who does not align with his demands for the Fed to cut rates.

NFL Top 100 list: Tracking players for 2025 rankings

-

 • NFL Top 100 list: Tracking players for 2025 rankings

Nick Brinkerhoff, USA TODAY July 1, 2025 at 2:18 AM

Everyone wants to be at the top of the charts.

There is undoubtedly a financial upside to claiming that spot, but there is also a status and respect that comes with the territory. Teddy Swims checked in at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 list for 2024 with his single "Lose Control," and the top-grossing film at the box office was "Inside Out 2," but what about the NFL's best player?

While the music and movie charts look at the past, the NFL is looking to the future. It's not a year-end celebration, but rather a hierarchy heading into the new season.

As the clock ticks towards kickoff of the regular season in Philadelphia on Sept. 4, the league will slowly reveal the NFL Top 100 players list.

This is no popularity contest, however. The players make their voices heard, voting on who they believe to be the best the league has to offer.

It will spark debates and some outrage. Some will be snubbed, others will rank higher than you think, but that's the beauty of it. The list will generate interest and spark discussion as we prepare for a new season.

Here's a look at the NFL's Top 100 players list for 2025, as voted on by the players.

Full NFL Top 100 players list for 2025

This section will be every day until the top 100 is revealed.

99. Leonard Williams, DL, Seahawks

100. Ladd McConkey, WR, Chargers

When will the NFL Top 100 player list be revealed?

The NFL will begin revealing the list on Monday, June 30 and will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 1.

Unlike in previous years, the reveal will be exclusively on X, formerly known as Twitter, and NFL+. Episodes will continue to be produced by NFL Films and premiere on weekdays at 10 a.m. ET and 11 a.m. ET.

Each weekday, two new player reveals will be featured, resulting in 10 new players being added to the list each week. The final 10 players will be announced on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. ET on NFL Network.

LONDON (AP) — A 92-year-old man on Monday was convicted of the rape and murder of a woman in southwestern England in what is thought to be the UK's longest-running cold case ever to be solved.

A jury at Bristol crown court found Ryland Headley, then aged 34, guilty of attacking 75-year-old Louisa Dunne in June 1967.

"Louisa Dunne died in a horrifying attack carried out in the place where she should have felt safest — her own home," prosecutor Charlotte Ream said. "For 58 years, this appalling crime went unsolved and Ryland Headley, the man we now know is responsible, avoided justice."

Dunne was found dead in her home by a neighbor on June 28, 1967. The cause of her death was found to be strangulation and asphyxiation. She had also been raped.

Investigators retained Dunne's clothing, including a blue skirt, and other samples from her body for further examination. They also recovered a palm print from a window which Headley is believed to have used to gain entry to her home.

In 2023, the case was reexamined and the skirt was sent away for forensic testing in May last year. DNA recovered from the item of clothing linked Headley to the murder scene after his DNA was added to the national database in 2012 for an unrelated incident.

Forensic scientists concluded that DNA from the skirt matched Headley's and the palm print was also his. Headley was arrested at his home in Suffolk in November.

Headley was convicted of two counts of rape in the late 1970s, after he attacked women, aged 79 and 84, in Ipswich. He pleaded guilty to the charges in 1978 and was jailed for seven years.

Testimonies of the two women were read during Headley's 2025 trial.

"Hearing the voices of the victims of his 1977 offences, is just incredibly powerful and harrowing," said Detective Inspector Dave Marchant, senior investigating officer for the case. "I think it gives us an insight into probably what happened within 58 Britannia Road (Dunne's home) to some degree."

Dunne's granddaughter Mary Dainton said she was stunned when she heard that Headley had been arrested. "I accepted that some murders just never get solved and some people have to live with that emptiness and sadness," she said.

Marchant said he is working with the National Crime Agency to determine whether Headley may be responsible for any other unsolved offenses over the years. "Crimes of this magnitude should never go unpunished and we will remain relentless in ensuring we do everything we can to advance other unsolved murder cases in the Avon and Somerset area," he said.

Headley will be sentenced on Tuesday.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran raised the official death toll for its war with Israel on Monday, with official media reporting 935 people were killed in the country during the 12-day conflict.

The state-run IRNA news agency did not give a breakdown between military and civilian casualties, but said of the 935 people, 38 were children and 132 were women. Its previous report last week said 627 people had been killed.

The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists over the weekend said 1,190 people had been killed according to data collected by the agency's network of medical and local volunteers. Of those, it said 436 were civilians, 435 military and 319 have not yet been identified.

The group has consistently reported higher casualties than the official reports from Iran.

Israel relentlessly attacked Iran beginning June 13, targeting its nuclear sites, defense systems, high-ranking military officials and atomic scientists.

In retaliation, Iran fired more than 550 ballistic missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted, but those that got through caused damage in many areas and killed 28 people.
